Compulsory Attendance

The Office of Compulsory School Attendance Enforcement is responsible for ensuring that all Mississippi students are afforded the opportunity to attend school and to enforce the Mississippi Compulsory School Attendance Law §37-13-91 of the Mississippi Code 1972 Annotated. The law governs compulsory school attendance. It requires a parent, legal guardian or custodian who has legal control or charge of a child age six (6) to seventeen (17) to enroll him or her in an education program (i.e. public, private or home school). Student enrollment must occur except under the limited circumstances specified in subsection three (3) of §37-13-91 which includes, but are not limited to, sending the child to a state approved, nonpublic, or educating the child at home in an organized educational program. July 1, 2003, the law was amended to include the following: a child, five (5) years of age, who enrolls in public kindergarten, will have to abide by the same guidelines as outlined in the §37-13-91.

New Student Registration

Parents should bring the following information when registering a child for the first time at NPSD:

(It should be noted that only the parent or legal guardian may register a student)

1.  Birth certificate - This must be the original document.  No copies will be accepted.

2.  Social Security Card

3.  Form 121 - This is the immunization record for your child.  It confirms that all state required vaccinations are current.  These forms can be obtained at your child's pediatrician's office or the local health clinic.  Only the original document can be accepted (no copies) and it must be signed and dated by the attending pediatrician or nurse.

4.  Withdrawal forms from the previous school (if applicable)

5.  Any legally binding documents that establish guardianship or primary custody for the student (if applicable).  Examples:  Guardianship by court decree, divorce settlements, foster care, etc.

6.  Proofs of Residency within the North Pike School District.  Please click below for the residency requirements checklist that should accompany your proofs of residence.

*
      *  Click here for affidavit forms*  (Affidavits are not allowed during Kindergarten pre-registration in April)

*  *An affidavit of residency is only used if the parent or guardian of the student DOES NOT reside in a place of abode that is owned or leased by that parent or guardian.  Example:  A parent and her 2 children live with the parent's mother and does not own the property or pay rent to stay with her mother.

New requirements for filing an affidavit have been introduced beginning with the 2016-2017 school year.  Both parties (the home owner and the legal parent/guardian)will have to sign the affidavit in the presence of a school notary and must provide photo id when signing the form.

Affidavits of residency are subject to review every 60 to 90 days and home visits by the district may be made to verify that the parent and students actually reside at that location
.

7.
District transfer documentation if student resides out of district and has been released by his/her home district school board and approved to attend North Pike School District by the NPSD School Board.  (If applicable).

Click here to download the Student Handbook.  Carefully read the handbook and contact your child's school if you have any questions or concerns.  IT IS HELPFUL TO PRINT OUT THE REGISTRATION FORMS IN THE FRONT OF THE STUDENT HANDBOOK (Pages 3-14) AND FILL THEM OUT PRIOR TO  COMING TO THE SCHOOL TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD.  This will save valuable time as you are registering your child.

Upon registering your child, the parent or guardian will be given enrollment forms to complete.  After these are completed and the above list has been submitted, your student will be enrolled in the North Pike School District.

Returning students

This is for the parents of students returning to NPSD after summer break.

Once all vital documentation of the student has been submitted during the initial enrollment (#1 through #5 above), these documents will remain valid from year to year without having to resubmit them to the school unless a change has been made in those documents - Example: change in custody or change of Social Security number, etc.  However, proof of residency within North Pike School District AND release from home district (if applicable) must be submitted each year in order to complete enrollment.

Proving residency each year is necessary to continue enrollment within the North Pike School District.  Dates and times for beginning of year enrollment will be made available by the school district and posted on the website.

*Transfer release documentation must be submitted and accepted by the school board each year (if applicable) - this does not carry over from year to year.

*Proofs of residence must be submitted each year - this does not carry over from year to year.  Click here to download the residency checklist.  Bring this checklist with you when you register your student.

Click here to download an affidavit form for establishing residence (if necessary).  This form should not be used unless the parent/guardian of the student resides with someone and does not rent, lease or own their place of abode.
